Being on a team or a part of an organization is a privilege and a big responsibility. You need to take ownership of your role, because each time you show up, you are not only showing up for yourself but for your teammates. We know, days are long and mentally it’s hard to take on all the things that are important to you. So, how can you make sure you still show up even when you don’t want to?

Pay attention to what your body is telling you!

Are you pausing to breathe when you start to feel anxious or overwhelmed? Are you fueling yourself with healthy things that keep your body feeling well? Should you have more or less coffee? Less sugary foods? More water? Do you need more sleep? For females, where are you in your cycle? How is that affecting you?

Having body awareness is just as important as having court/field awareness. The more you know about your body, the more you know how to self-regulate. Maybe you need a few more hours of sleep, maybe you need to take some deep breaths. Whatever it is, knowing how to take control over your emotions and reactions is going to be a game changer on and off the court/field.

How to be TOUGH in 5 easy steps

Here are some tools to get through the tough days when you feel like you can’t do one more thing.

TOUGH:

  • Take a breath – take 5 deep belly breaths
  • Go outside – walk outside for 5 mins (preferably 20 mins before 10:00am)
  • Unwind – lay down on the floor, legs up the wall
  • Go inward – meditate with a 5 min meditation (find one on yax online)
  • Hug – hug your dog, roommate, friend, teammate, coach
