Are drinking green smoothies really all that good for you? We say YES! Drinking green smoothies are a great and fast way to ingest good sources of minerals, vitamins and nutrients. It’s also a great way to stay hydrated as the temperatures rise in this great city. Especially if you are not a big fan of veggies, you can join the growing number of Houstonians who are drinking them instead.
Consuming green smoothies is a good way to get vegetables in your diet, says Joan Salge Blake, a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “Vegetables are high in potassium, which can help lower blood pressure. If the vegetables are pureed so that the fiber is still intact, they will help fill you up.” But people who have diabetes or kidney stones should be careful about what they mix into their smoothies, experts say.
In the meantime, if you are looking for a new recipe to change up your smoothie habit or start a new one, try this recipe! I got it from Cure Joy – an ayurveda website. It is apple-licious!
1 cup coconut water
1 cup kale (or any leafy green you have in the fridge)
1 cup spinach
1 1/2 fuji apples (or your favorite kind of apple)
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1 cup of ice
dash of chia seeds or flax seeds (or both!)
Add all ingredients to your blender. Blend until smooth!
Note: I use a Vitamix blender and highly recommend them!
