What can I expect on my first visit?
You can expect to have some FUN at YAX! We’ve got several options to optimize your fitness and make your trip worth while. You can enjoy a group training class where you’ll work with a “team” in a circuit like manner moving through several functional movements. These classes are high intensity and very challenging! After you’ve earned your sweat, we’ll guide you to shavasana through a nice yoga cool down. You can also hop in to a 60 minute warm yoga class. We have everything from vinyasa to yin. Check our schedule out here. Don’t have a mat? Don’t worry. We have mats available for rent for $3 + tax. Come wearing socks and shoes, comfortable athletic attire and well hydrated. However, we’ll have water available just in case.
Be sure to arrive 15 minutes in advance to check in, set up and say hello to your teammates. We will have full men’s & women’s locker rooms equipped with showers for your personal use. We hope this makes it easy for you to practice before work or a night out on the town.
I have never practiced yoga nor do I consider myself an ‘athlete’, can I still participate?
Absolutely! The most important thing you need to do is show up. We’ll walk you through the rest. No matter if you’re just starting a training regimen, are a triathlete or have been out of the “game” for a while, we’re here to support you 100% on your journey. Recognize where you are, give it your all and be kind to your body.
If I arrive late, will I still be able to get into class?
In order to offer the best possible experience for our students and support our coaches, we ask that you be prepared to practice or train when class is scheduled to start. We want you to get the full experience of what YAX has to offer. If you do arrive late, you will be accepted in to class up until 5 minutes after the scheduled start time. If you arrive later than 5 minutes, you will be asked to wait for the next class to start. Typically we have either athletex or yoga classes schedule so you should be able to get something in. That’s why we ask to be prepared and wear socks and shoes (just in case)!
Do you offer hot yoga?
We offer a warm environment for our yoga classes. We believe that keeping the studio warm, but not overly hot is ideal. The yoga studio will be kept at a well ventilated ~75 to 80 degrees. The practice itself should make you sweat, not the temperature of the room. Sweating can be cleansing and help with flexibility and injury prevention. However, if you work in an overly heated room, you may not be able to accurately judge your body’s limits. The best temperature is one that keeps you focused on your breath and movement.
What should I wear to class, and what should I bring with me?
If you are attending a YAX or Athletex class please wear comfortable athletic attire, socks + shoes and perhaps a hand towel and water bottle. For YAX classes, please bring your yoga mat as well. Don’t have one? We have some available for rent for $3 + tax.
If you are attending a yoga class, please wear athletic attire that is slightly form fitting. We may turn you upside down! Also, please bring a mat, towel and water bottle. Any extra yoga props used in class will be provided by YAX, free of charge.
What are assists?
Typically, our coaches like to offer assists. Assists simple mean assisting the student in the posture. We may offer adjustments by touching you in a manner to help you fully grasp the pose or guide you to safer alignment. If you are assisted in class, it’s simply meant to better your practice. If you would rather not be assisted, just let your coach know. They are not required.
Should I eat before I train or practice yoga?
While you don’t want to train/practice on a full stomach, you want to have something energizing on the stomach at least 60 minutes prior to class. Something small like fresh fruit or nuts is a great idea, generally speaking. Also, make sure you are well hydrated prior to class. You will also have to option of taking water breaks when needed during class. If you’re thirsty, drink.
Is there any proper “yoga etiquette” I should know about?
Yes, yes y’all! Check out our etiquette guidelines here.
How much does it cost for me to attend a class?
At YAX, we offer adult memberships, youth memberships (11+), class packs and drop in rates. Please see mindbody for all of our updated pricing options.
Where do I park?
We are located off Westview, between Gessner and the Beltway. Look for the large metal building opposite the silos. We share a sports complex with Skyline Juniors and Just Play Sports! We have a HUGE parking lot with over 200 spaces to choose from. We are the only 2nd floor tenant, so come up the stairs and let yourself in!
I’m a beginner. Where do I start?
We have beginner workshops geared specifically toward your needs. Check the Playshops tab.
Do you offer child care?
We currently do not offer child care. Keep a look out for special events and kids camps throughout the year.
I have an injury. Can I still participate?
You are our kind of people. Having suffered many injuries ourselves, we are prepared to keep you moving. Whether you’re in the yoga studio or gym, we have several modifications or even some physical therapy exercises to keep you involved. It is our goal to get you back on track, to keep playing the sport you love. We first ask that you seek attention from a medical professional. Second, we’d love to take you through a functional movement screen. Sign up for FMS here. Third, let’s modify, then move.
We also work closely with our favorite and highly recommended chiropractor, physical therapist, massage therapist and sport psychologist. Don’t know where to start? Ask us.
I want to be more involved with YAX!
